The Church and the world mourns the death of our Holy Pontiff, Pope Francis, and prays for his soul and eternal rest in the peace of God’s Kingdom. Pope Francis’ pontificate was 12 years and we now contemplate his transformative yet controversial leadership style that has impacted the Catholic Church and the world.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina (1936), Pope Francis emerged from the Jesuit tradition, emphasizing service, discernment, and a “Church for the poor.” His choice of the name Francis – after St. Francis of Assisi – signaled his commitment to humility, simplicity, and ecological stewardship.
As the first Jesuit pope and the first from the global South, he challenged to decentralize Vatican authority, promote synodality (collaborative decision-making), and prioritize pastoral mercy over rigid doctrine. Francis’s papacy was not without conflict. Traditionalists criticized his openness to LGBTQ+ Catholics (“Who am I to judge?”), his cautious reforms on divorce and remarried Catholics (Amoris Laetitia), and his environmental encyclical, Laudato Si. Meanwhile, progressives often felt he did not go far enough, particularly on women’s ordination and clerical abuse reforms.
The world remembers Pope Francis’ visits to refugees, prisoners, and the sick, which embodied his belief that the Church leaders, bishops, pastors, priests must “smell like the sheep.” His interfaith dialogues with Muslims, Jews, and Orthodox Christians was always an attempt to bring unity and peace. His apology for the Church abuses signaled repentance and reconciliation.
Pope Francis was loved by many for his warmth, yet resented by some for his reforms. Pope Francis’s life and death reminds us of a leader who sought to make the Church more compassionate, inclusive, and engaged with the world’s suffering. “The Church must be a field hospital for the wounded, not a customs house for the perfect,” Pope Francis.
As we mourn the death of Pope Francis, let us join with Catholics worldwide in praying for the repose of his soul.
O God, faithful rewarder of souls, grant that your departed servant, Pope Francis, whom you made successor of Peter and shepherd of your Church, may happily enjoy for ever in your presence in heaven the mysteries of your grace and compassion, which he faithfully ministered on earth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
St. Jude, pray for us ~
Blessings & Joy,
Fr. Ryan
